The Western world is now showing interest in Hindi films — all because of its dance and music content, something that they ridiculed a few years ago, says megastar Amitabh Bachchan. “We were ridiculed, and the West was very cynical about the way we made our films and the content — the songs and the dance, and the music was something that was kind of looked down upon many years ago. “But that very aspect has now become its USP, and people love to see that. I would expect that this is how and what our cinema is all about, Amitabh said on CNN’s show Talk Asia.

Speaking about Hollywood-Bollywood collaborations, Amitabh said: I think this has got to do a lot more with economics rather than sharing creativity… Hollywood is very healthy in their finance, they are using their money to invest in productions that are coming out of India. And in that respect, yes, holding hands with Hollywood companies or any other company is now becoming a routine.” Many Hindi films recently have seen international collaborations, including Singh Is Kingg, which was produced by Warner Brothers, and animated film Roadside Romeo that was financed by Disney. Kambakkht Ishq featured Hollywood stars Sylvester Stallone, Brandon Routh and Denise Richards. Amitabh himself will be sharing screen space with British actor Ben Kingsley in his forthcoming film Teen Patti.

The Supreme Court has asked the Central Government to provide details of steps initiated to ensure safety of Indian students facing racial attacks in Australia and Canada by June 26. A vacation bench of Justices Dalveer Bhandari and Asok Kumar Ganguly also asked the Attorney General of India to assist the court in the matter, which was posted for further hearing to June 29. The apex court passed the direction in response to submissions made by the petitioner D K Garg, an advocate, who had accused the Central government of inaction in dealing with the racial attacks on Indian students in Australia and Canada.

The spate of attacks on Indian students in Australia and Canada which Indian media have called race-based have sparked protests in India. Close on the heels of Indians being targeted in Australia, six members of the Indian expatriate community in Canada were racially abused and assaulted by a group of youths while playing tennis on the outskirts of Vancouver.

A 42-year-old former school teacher, who migrated to Nepal from the hill town of Darjeeling in India’s West Bengal state, was arrested for the brutal murder of a high school student that Tuesday continued to send shock waves and trigger protests throughout the Himalayan republic.High schools remained closed countrywide while enraged students, some still in their uniform, blocked traffic in Kalimati and Kalanki, two busy commercial areas in the capital Tuesday, demanding security for students and justice for their peer, 18-year-old Khyati Shrestha, whose headless and limbless torso was found in a garbage dump in the valley Sunday. Police arrested Biren Pradhan, who reportedly said during interrogation that he was a permanent resident of Darjeeling town and a science graduate from the famed St Joseph’s College there run by Christian missionaries.

Pradhan will be charged with the kidnap of the teen, murdering her and then cutting up her body and scattering the parts in different areas to avoid detection, police said. The Kathmandu police told IANS that Pradhan had told them he was an Indian of Nepali origin who held an Indian ration card and other Indian IDs. He came to Kathmandu more than 15 years ago and taught science at Adarsh Vidya Madir, one of the biggest secondary schools in Lalitpur district neighbouring Kathmandu. After an almost 14-year stint there, he quit recently, reportedly because he was planning to join his wife and two daughters in Canada.

It was a premeditated and cunningly plotted plan, police said. Pradhan knew the victim and her family as they had been his tenants in the past. A few days before she was kidnapped, he had gone to their new residence and had a meal with them, reportedly using the opportunity to steal his photograph from the Shresthas’ family album. To lure the teen away to his den, Pradhan compelled a former student of his, a 16-year-old schoolgirl, to call her up and feed her a cock and bull story, police said. On June 5, Khyati received a call on her mobile telephone from the teenaged accomplice, who pretended she was calling on behalf of a well-known glossy magazine for women.

The accomplice said Khyati had been chosen for an all-expenses paid trip to Pokhara city as well as a cash award and invited her to come and collect it. The unsuspecting girl agreed to meet the caller, who took her to Pradhan’s apartment, where he chloroformed her and killed her, police said. He then used the victim’s mobile phone to send messages to her family, asking for a ransom of NRS 1 million. To ensure a quick getaway, Pradhan asked the family to go to a town on the border of Nepal and West Bengal with the money. However, he ran out of luck when the girl’s mother saw him in the town. Also, the domestic help who was sent to hand over the money recognised him. Pradhan’s attempt to imprison the boy failed.

Despite being recognised, the cocky man returned to Kathmandu where he was arrested. He reportedly told police he had dropped the girl’s head, legs, arms and torso in different places to make identification impossible. According to some reports, Pradhan was an inveterate gambler who played for high stakes at Kathmandu’s casinos. He had mounting debts and planned the murder to get quick cash. The 16-year-old accomplice was a student of his at the Lalitpur school. She had just completed her school-leaving examination. There has been a sharp rise in kidnappings and murders in Nepal, with students and businessmen being the prime targets. Recently, there were protests in the capital when two men tried to kidnap a 10-year-old girl in broad daylight as she was going to school.

On October 2nd the then health minister Ramadoss has banned smoking in public places. That created quite a stir both for the ban and the ambiguity in defining public place. Did that stop smoking or sales or so called smoking in public places? Don’t even bother answering those questions. The focus has shifted to a different thing now. There is a proposal to ban surrogate ads. These are the ads which try to sell something else under the same brand name. Works especially for tobacco and alcohol products.

Have you seen Ajay Devgan in the Bagpiper ad. After a fight he recommends Bagpiper and after a pause tags it with the word soda? The word soda comes a bit late and the audience is already thinking. That is surrogate advertising. Bagpiper Soda is a surrogate product. And Ajay Devgan is not a big fan of the Soda. As, they cannot market their products directly alcohol companies come up with surrogate products and ads.

Do you know why all the alcohol brands including our favorite Kingfisher has a bottled water brand too? None of them are actually interested in bottled water market (though that market is a very good market to be in). But in the bottled beer market. Introduced by information and broadcasting minister Ambika Soni in both the Houses of Parliament on Tuesday, the paper suggests, if a product that uses a brand or logo, which is also used for promoting cigarettes and tobacco products, then the visual of the advertisement should depict only the product being advertised and not prohibited products in any form or manner. (Mint)

Now, government is planning to take that away from them. Do you think that’s fair? The notion that the advertisements propel the consumer into drinking is misplaced (they might be true to some extent). It doesn’t take an ad for someone to become alcoholic. In villages there is the local variety of alcohol which comes in different flavors and names. Who is marketing those? A village or a town might or might not have a school. But it is bound to have a liquor shop.

One more time, the bans and the campaigns are misplaced. If the government really want to root out the problems they have to start at a different level. Banning surrogate ads is a low hanging fruit which doesn’t serve any purpose. Though this ban is much better than the blanket ban on FDI in retail. What will happen to the Bangalore Royal Challengers team? Does that qualify as surrogate advertising and the team itself a surrogate product?

If the ban comes through, how should the actual products market themselves? Should the go online? Should they go viral? What should they do?

South African sports teams have been involved in some real clangers over the years. Pride of place goes to a top-end cricket match that took place in Edgbaston, England 10 years ago. It was the semi-final of the World Cup: Australia against South Africa, the hardened troopers against the wide-eyed aspirants. Eight years after their readmission to world sport, the South African cricket team had yet to reach a major final. “Chokers” was the tagline being thrown about and the team despised it.

This was their chance. “We’re tipped as favourites, we’re going to play like favourites,” said Hansie Cronje, their captain. But in one of those epic dramas that only sport can provide, rotten luck and a moment of madness conspired to deny South Africa. Having dismissed Australia cheaply for 213 (Shaun Pollock took five wickets for 36 runs), the Proteas attacked the target with Jacques Kallis pounding 53 and Jonty Rhodes and Pollock weighing in nicely.

Somehow they coped with a Shane Warne in full majesty, the spin-bowling genius carved up the top order with four for 29. After the demise of Kallis and Rhodes, big-hitting Lance Klusener, the quiet hurricane, took charge. The third umpire ruled Steve Elworthy out of his crease, bringing bowling hero Allan Donald – he had taken four for 32 earlier in the day – into the heat of battle.

Moments later Paul Reiffel dropped Klusener, whose smashed shot passed straight through his hands at long-on.And so the pendulum swung. Even as the crescendo built in the final over, South Africa were in the ascendancy. Klusener cracked one four. And then another. Just one run was needed from four balls. Most spectators would have backed the batsmen, especially as Klusener’s big hitting had dominated the tournament.

Sensing the party to come, Donald punched the air and danced a little jig. But Donald backed up too far for the next ball and was almost run out as Klusener mis-hit the shot. But this was no time to panic. The balance was still with South Africa. And then it all went wrong. Klusener hammered the next ball from Damien Fleming straight down the wicket and charged off, assuming that Donald would be flying down the wicket. He wasn’t.

Donald was watching the ball and was rooted to the spot. Alarmed to see Klusener screaming down the track, Donald finally set off, only to drop his bat. The ball was thrown to Lehmann, then to wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist, who broke the stumps and South African hearts. The match was tied – 213 all out. It was a staggering denouement to a cracking match. But it was also not good enough for South Africa: Australia advanced because they had won the earlier Super Six match between the teams.

The Australians erupted in celebration. It did not seem real, it could not be. As Donald and Klusener traipsed off, cold, bitter reality took hold. South Africa had blown it again, their chance at glory ruined by indecision and alarm. Years later, Donald reflected on his awful role that day. “I don’t think disappointment comes in bigger packages than that. It was the most disgusting thing that could happen,” he said.

“The headlines in South Africa were not friendly. There was one saying ‘Donald, don’t bother coming home’. ” A pall of gloom settled on the country in the immediate aftermath. “Hansie’s boys shattered,” was a headline in the Daily Star. “A stunning suicidal run out pulled the shutters down on South Africa’s World Cup aspirations,” said the Cape Times. Those words perfectly summed up the national mood.

Indeed, not even the knowledge that South Africa had played a part in what came to be commonly regarded as the greatest match in one-day cricket history (until a 438 game between these same teams seven years later) was enough to soothe shattered spirits. “We were so close, four years after the rugby guys,” said Donald. “But you have to accept it, get on with it. There’s nothing you can do about it. ” The chokers tag remains associated with South Africa to this day – seen as recently as Thursday when they were beaten by Pakistan in the semi-finals of the World Twenty20 in England.

Rockford aldermen say “no” to a new nightclub, called Tabu, slated to move in on East State Street. Tabu would have moved into a building in the 3700 block of East State but some aldermen say there have been too many incidents at that site in the past. It was formerly home to the nightclub Colicm, that was condemned after a major brawl there last year.

However, aldermen who support the club say now is not the time to reject businesses that could bring our city fresh tax dollars. “It’s created a lot of problems over there, a lot of police calls,” says Rockford Alderman Frank Beach. “Every one of these owners that have come in, have come in and filed their applications. They’ve presented themself well, they had the best of intentions to make it work, it’s never worked.”

Alderman Nancy Johnson counters, “I have a real issue with, sort of, the sins of those before carry forward and I’m not sure that’s really correct and that’s really appropriate.” The only way Tabu could move forward in that location is if one of the aldermen who voted against it brings a motion to reconsider next week. On Monday night aldermen also approved a new call center that’s expected to bring several hundred jobs to Rockford.

The stage is set, the world is watching and the first ball is ready to be bowled and it looks like it’s the bowlers who will dominate this year’s Twenty20 World Cup in England. It has been opined that the shortened form of the game is geared too much towards the batsmen but in reality, that is where the fireworks happen. Fans would rather watch a batsmen flay a bowler to all parts of the ground than watch a bowler send down six dot balls. It is just common sense.

However, for those cricket betting punters keen to make some money on this tournament, keep a close eye on the bowlers and just how each team uses them. When T20 first hit the global scene, it was still treated like a traditional form of cricket, the opening bowlers were quick, the spinners came on in the middle overs and the openers returned to finish it all off.

Now teams are opting for spinners to take the new pill and the quicks are more about variation than out and out pace. The other thing that is quickly becoming evident, the new formula for T20 if you will, is to institute bowling changes very regularly, maybe a new change every over. It is a clever ploy because it doesn’t allow batsmen to get their eye in and feel the rhythm of the game, which is where Twenty20 cricket is won – in the momentum of the game.

India are the masters of this style of play and use bowling changes to great affect and have a host of slow bowlers to make opposition batsmen force at the ball as opposed to using the pace of the ball against the quicks. With the likes of Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh all willing and able to dismiss wayward batsmen, it is easy to see why India are favorites to win this year.
